Where to stay in Lake Tekapo: the short answer

For most visitors the village is the most practical place to stay in Lake Tekapo. Buses from Christchurch and Queenstown arrive there, the supermarket is open every day, and the stargazing tours and the Mount Cook shuttle start in or next to the village. You can walk to the lakeshore, the footbridge and the hot pools.

Places to stay near Lake Tekapo include farm stays out in the basin, but you need a car for those. Twizel and Fairlie are other bases within an hour's drive. If you plan a night tour, a bed in the village saves a drive in the dark: book one of the Lake Tekapo stargazing tours and walk back afterwards.

Staying in Lake Tekapo village

The village lies on the south shore where State Highway 8 crosses the lake outlet. Accommodation is spread through the village, near the shore and on its edges. Everything you need on foot is close: the supermarket at Rapuwai Lane with an ATM, a fuel station at the northern end of the village and the hot pools on Lakeside Drive, which have free parking. The lakeshore path from the road bridge to the hot pools is 2.8 km and takes about 30 minutes one way.

The footbridge over the outlet links the village with the path to the Church of the Good Shepherd. The church asks visitors to park on the village side and walk over, because parking on Pioneer Drive is very limited. Public toilets are not all free, so keep some coins. More on shops and walks is in our guide to the village.

Lakefront rooms and lake views

Not every room in the village has a lake view or direct access to the shore. If the view matters to you, ask the host which way the window faces before you book. The lake level is regulated for hydro power, so the shoreline below a lakefront room can look different from photos.

Choosing a room

Whatever kind of room you book, location matters more than the label. Check the walking distance to the bus stop, the supermarket and the check-in point of your evening tour. Outdoor lighting rules in the Mackenzie District aim to limit light spilling upwards, which helps the night sky, but for the darkest views you still need to get away from buildings.
