Camping at Lake Tekapo: the rules in short

Tekapo is an area where the Mackenzie District Council prohibits freedom camping. A self-contained vehicle does not change that: the ban applies to campervans too. Paid campgrounds and designated camping sites are separate from the ban, and that is where you sleep. Camping at Lake Alexandrina is arranged through a local committee.

Since 7 June 2026 the old blue self-contained sticker is no longer valid. Sites that ask for certified self-contained vehicles now need a green warrant on display and a fixed toilet. With your pitch sorted, spend an evening on one of the Lake Tekapo stargazing tours, which check in in the village.

Campgrounds at Lake Tekapo

Your options are paid campgrounds and designated camping sites. Both are outside the freedom camping ban, and both have their own rules on vehicles, tents, fires and pets. In the summer holidays it is wise to book ahead, and in winter to check that your site is open and how cold it gets at night.

Supplies are easy in the village. The supermarket at Rapuwai Lane opens daily from 08:00–21:00 and has an ATM, and there is a fuel station at the northern end of the village. Public toilets are not all free: the toilet on the village side near the church costs NZD 1, and the council is moving more of its toilets to a pay-per-use model. Our village guide covers shops and parking.

Camping at Lake Alexandrina

Lake Alexandrina lies just west of Mount John. Camping there is arranged through the Lake Alexandrina and McGregor committee. Check the current fees and rules with them before you go, and do not assume DOC passes or DOC fees apply here. There is also an existing settlement of huts at the lake, so do not count on finding a place to rent there. Our day trips page has more on the lake.

Freedom camping in Tekapo

Freedom camping means staying overnight outside a campground, for example in a car park or by the shore. In Tekapo this is not allowed on council land. The council's Responsible Freedom Camping Bylaw was adopted on 12 December 2023 and came into force on 16 December 2023. It covers land the council controls. Land of DOC, LINZ or private owners has its own rules, which is no invitation to camp there: stay only where a sign, a campground or the landowner allows it.

Fines are infringement fees set by law and depend on the offence. The 2023 bylaw refers to a range of NZD 200 to NZD 800, so check the current amount. The simplest way to avoid one is to book a campground before it gets dark.

Self-contained campervans and the green warrant

New Zealand has changed its self-contained rules. After the transition period ended on 7 June 2026, the blue sticker is no longer enough. A campervan counts as certified self-contained only with a green warrant, shown in the vehicle, and a fixed toilet. You need this for sites that are reserved for certified self-contained vehicles. It does not mean that tents are banned at normal campgrounds. If you rent a campervan, ask the rental company whether it carries a green warrant before you pick it up.

For most campers at Lake Tekapo, a paid campground is the right choice whatever the vehicle. A green warrant opens more sites on the wider road trip, but not a free night in Tekapo itself.

Fires, gas cookers and dogs

Open fires and fire pits are banned at the council's camping sites. In the Takapō Regional Park on the east shore, portable gas barbecues are allowed at least 2 m from vegetation. Neither rule is a general right to light a fire on any lakeshore.

Dog rules depend on the place. Dogs are not allowed on the DOC tracks on Mount John and Cowans Hill. In the regional park, dogs must be on a lead outside the fenced dog park. For campgrounds and Lake Alexandrina, ask before you bring your dog. Our page on walks around Lake Tekapo lists the tracks.

Camping through the seasons

Nights are cool even in summer, with mean lows of 8.2 to 8.5 °C in January and February. From June to August the mean low is below freezing and ground frost is common on most days, so a tent needs a winter sleeping bag. Snow can affect the mountain roads in any season; carry chains in winter and check the road before you drive. See the best time to visit for the months in detail.

If your road trip continues over the Haast Pass, camping on that route is covered in the camping guide for the Blue Pools and Makarora.
