Scenic flights from Lake Tekapo
Lake Tekapo scenic flights take off right at the lake, so you do not need to drive to Aoraki/Mount Cook first. The plane flights leave from the private Lake Tekapo Airport, directly on State Highway 8 and about 4 km south of the village. The helicopter flight starts on the Tekapo-Twizel Road. There are no scheduled passenger flights to Tekapo; these are sightseeing flights that return to where they started.
The choice is simple. The plane covers a long route over the Southern Alps, Aoraki/Mount Cook, the Tasman Glacier and the glaciers of the West Coast. The helicopter stays closer, over the Mackenzie lakes and the mountains, and includes a landing in the alpine terrain. Both depend on the weather on the day.

Our picks: scenic flights
The 50-minute flight is the all-rounder; the helicopter is shorter and lands in the mountains; the glacier combo starts at Mount Cook Airport.

For most visitors who want to see Aoraki/Mount Cook and the big glaciers from the air, the plane flight is the better choice: it covers far more ground for the time. If you would rather stand on a mountain for a few minutes and see the turquoise lakes from close up, choose the helicopter.

The plane flight from Tekapo is about 50 minutes in the air and about 200 km long. Allow 1 hour in total. The route crosses to Aoraki/Mount Cook and the Tasman Glacier and continues over Westland to the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers and the West Coast before turning back. A local guide gives commentary, and you get a flight information guide.

On the West Coast side, the glaciers have their own guide on our sister site: helicopter flights at Franz Josef.

Helicopter flights with an alpine landing
The helicopter flight from Tekapo lasts 25 minutes and includes an alpine landing and an experienced pilot. It flies over the Mackenzie Basin and its lakes and into the mountains nearby. Food and drinks are not included. The start is on the Tekapo-Twizel Road.
Whether and where the helicopter lands is decided on the day. Wind, cloud and snow on the landing site can change the plan, so treat the landing as part of the flight when conditions allow it, not as a promise. Your booking confirmation has the exact meeting point and time.
