Lake Tekapo attractions at a glance
Tekapo is small, and most things to see lie within walking distance of the village or a short drive away. The church and the footbridge are on the lakefront, the hot pools are on Lakeside Drive, and the summit road is about 15 minutes by car from the village. The big draw comes after dark: the village lies inside the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve.
Many of the main things to do in Lake Tekapo cost nothing: walking the lakeshore, standing on the footbridge above the turquoise water or climbing Mount John on foot. The paid ones are the hot pools, the summit road and the night tours. If you only have one evening, book one of the Lake Tekapo stargazing tours early, because the night is the part you cannot do on your own on Mount John.

Lake Tekapo tourist attractions
The places most visitors put on their list, with what to expect.
Church of the Good Shepherd
The small stone church on the shore was opened in 1935 and is still in use for services. The grounds are open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. in daylight saving time and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in winter. The inside may be open from Wednesday to Sunday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., without a guarantee, and photos inside are not allowed. The collie statue by the lake honours the working dogs of the sheep stations.
Church guide →Mount John and the observatory
Mount John rises above the village to 1,029 m at the observatory site. The University of Canterbury observatory opened officially in 1965 and still does research and teaching. You can drive up on the private road or walk, and enjoy the view over the lake and the Mackenzie Basin. The telescope buildings stay closed to day visitors.
Mount John guide →The hot pools
Three hot pools at 36.5 to 38.5 °C, cooler pools and a children's play area sit at 300 Lakeside Drive. The water is heated underground spring water, not geothermal. The hottest pool is for adults only.
Hot pools guide →The night sky
The reserve was recognised in 2012 and covers 4,367 km², including the Mackenzie Basin and Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. You can look up from the lakeshore for free, or join a guided tour with telescopes. What you see depends on cloud, the moon and the season.
Stargazing guide →The footbridge and the lakefront
A footbridge crosses the outlet of the lake and links the village with the path to the church. It is the recommended way to reach the church, because parking on Pioneer Drive is very limited.
Village guide →The lupins
In late November and December, pink and purple lupins usually flower along the shores. They are an introduced problem plant in the braided riverbeds, so look but do not pick them or spread their seeds.

A guided drive takes you to places that are hard to reach by road.
