Christchurch to Lake Tekapo at a glance
Lake Tekapo sits in the Mackenzie Basin in the middle of the South Island, and State Highway 8 runs straight through the village. The usual way in is Christchurch to Lake Tekapo: about 228 km and roughly 3 hours by car from the city, on SH1 and SH79 and then through Fairlie onto SH8. From Queenstown (ZQN) the drive takes about 2.5 to 3 hours over the Lindis Pass.
Without a car you have a daily bus from central Christchurch, a direct shuttle from Christchurch Airport on its operating days, and a daily bus from Queenstown. If you would rather see the route on a guided trip, small-group Lake Tekapo tours from Christchurch or Queenstown stop at the lake on the way to Aoraki/Mount Cook.

Car hire and parking
Rental desks at Christchurch Airport are in the International Arrivals area. You can pick up a car you booked ahead or take one on availability. Companies based outside the airport run a shuttle from Door 2. Check prices, whether snow chains are allowed and whether gravel roads are covered in your own rental contract, because rules differ from company to company.
Parking in Tekapo is easy in most places but not everywhere. At the church, space on Pioneer Drive is very limited, so park on the village side and walk across the footbridge. The hot pools have free parking. The regional park on the eastern shore has three car parks. There is no general rule that parking is free across the whole village.

Driving in New Zealand: licence, left side and snow
What the transport agency NZTA asks of visiting drivers.
Drive on the left
Traffic keeps left in New Zealand. Check the weather and road conditions before you set off.
Foreign driving licence
NZTA allows a valid overseas car licence for up to 18 months from your last arrival and has announced a return to 12 months from 1 November 2026. A licence that is not in English needs a correct English translation or an International Driving Permit, carried together with the original.
Snow and ice
SH8 is an alpine route, and snow can reach the Lindis Pass and the Mackenzie Basin in spring too. Know how to fit chains before you need them, drive slowly on snow or ice and avoid sudden braking. No time of year guarantees snow-free roads.
Queenstown to Lake Tekapo
From Queenstown (ZQN) the drive takes about 2.5 to 3 hours from town, heading north over the Lindis Pass on SH8. Allow extra time from the airport and in winter, when the pass can see snow. The daily bus leaves from Athol Street in town, not from the airport, and takes about 4 hours to 4 hours 15 minutes. Check the arrival stop in Tekapo when you book.
The same road passes Twizel and Lake Pukaki, so many people combine the trip with Aoraki/Mount Cook. Our sister guide explains how to reach Aoraki/Mount Cook, and our page on day trips from Lake Tekapo covers the shuttle from the village.

Shorter links and other starting points.
Fairlie to Tekapo
Fairlie is the last town on the Christchurch route, about 30 minutes before Tekapo on SH8. The airport shuttle stops there too.
Twizel
Twizel is about 40 to 45 minutes from Tekapo by car, on the road towards Queenstown.
Dunedin to Lake Tekapo
Coming from Dunedin, plan the drive with a current route planner and check road conditions on the day.
Lake Tekapo Airport
The small private aerodrome lies 4 km south of the village on SH8. It is the base for scenic flights from Lake Tekapo. For your arrival by air, plan on CHC or ZQN.
Entry to New Zealand
Rules as of 2026 for travellers from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the USA.
These countries are on the visa waiver list. For a normal short holiday you usually need an NZeTA before you travel: NZD 17 in the official app or NZD 23 on the website, plus the visitor levy (IVL) of NZD 100. The NZeTA is valid for 2 years and several trips, and a single visit is normally up to 3 months. Allow up to 72 hours for processing, and check the rules for the passport you actually travel on.
