The village on the lakefront

Lake Tekapo village sits at the southern end of the lake in the Mackenzie Basin, in the Mackenzie District of Canterbury. State Highway 8 runs straight through it, so most visitors arrive on the main road and park within a few minutes of the water. The village lies at about 710 m above sea level, and nights are cool even in summer.

Everything a short stay needs is within walking distance: a supermarket, a petrol station, the hot pools on Lakeside Drive, the check-in offices for evening stargazing tours and the footbridge that leads towards the Church of the Good Shepherd. If you plan to spend an evening under the sky, the Lake Tekapo stargazing tours check in at offices in the village, and several include transport from there to their viewing site.

Lake Tekapo shops and services

The basics you can count on in the village, as of 2026.

Supermarket

The supermarket stands on Rapuwai Lane at State Highway 8. It opens daily from 08:00 to 21:00 and has an ATM and a grocery range. Public holiday hours can differ, so check before a holiday weekend.

Petrol station

There is a petrol station at the northern end of the village. Fill up here before longer drives into the basin, for example to the ski area or towards Aoraki/Mount Cook.

Shops and tour offices

The main road has a row of shops, and the check-in desks for stargazing tours are in the same part of the village. Your booking confirmation names the exact office and the time to be there.

Bus stops

The daily coach from Christchurch ends at 1 Motuariki Lane in the village. A direct bus to Christchurch Airport leaves Tekapo at 09:15 on the days it runs, so check the timetable. Details are on the getting there page.

The Lake Tekapo footbridge

A footbridge crosses the outlet of the lake and links the village side with the path to the Church of the Good Shepherd. The present bridge is a newer structure from the mid-2010s. It is not the historic road bridge nearby.

The church asks visitors to use this route. Parking on Pioneer Drive next to the church is very limited, so leave the car on the village side of the footbridge and walk over. The church grounds are open from 09:00 to 20:00 in summer time and from 09:00 to 17:00 in winter time, and a donation of NZD 5 is requested. More on visiting is on the Church of the Good Shepherd page.

Close to the church stands the bronze statue of a collie on a rock. It honours the working dogs of the sheep stations in the Mackenzie Country. The background is on the history page.

Using the village as a base

Tekapo works well as a base for the Mackenzie Basin. Fairlie is about 30 minutes away, Twizel 40 to 45 minutes and Aoraki/Mount Cook Village about 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 15 minutes. Our sister site has the details on Mount Cook Village, and the trip itself is covered on our day trips page.

The village is part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, and the lighting rules in the district plan aim to limit light that shines upwards. Bring a small torch if you walk along the lakefront after dark. Where to sleep in and around the village is covered on the where to stay page.
