Day trips from Lake Tekapo at a glance

Lake Tekapo sits on State Highway 8 in the Mackenzie Basin, and most day trips from here follow the same road south and west. The classic Lake Tekapo day trip goes to Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, past the long shore of Lake Pukaki. Closer to home, Twizel and Fairlie are short drives, and Lake Alexandrina lies just west of Mount John.

You can drive yourself or book a seat. Tours that start in Tekapo come in two forms: a shuttle that drops you in the national park for walks on your own, and a small-group day tour with a guide and lunch. Many tours from Christchurch or Queenstown also pass the lake, but they start and end in those cities.

Mount Cook day tours from Tekapo

Four ways to book a day at Aoraki/Mount Cook. Check where the tour starts before you pay.

Shuttle with self-guided walks

The shuttle leaves from the supermarket car park in the village and runs to Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park via Lake Pukaki and the Tasman Lake area. The day takes about 8 to 9 hours. Water, snacks, Wi-Fi and a charging socket are on board, and snow spikes are handed out when there is snow. Lunch is not included, so buy it in the village before you leave. In the park you walk at your own pace: the Hooker Valley and Tasman walks are self-guided, and there is no guided walk or glacier boat trip in the fare.

Small-group day tour with lunch

A shorter guided format from Tekapo takes about 5 to 6 hours, depending on the tour. It includes commentary, lunch, snacks and bottled water in a small group. It suits travellers who prefer a guide and a fixed plan to long hours on the trails.

One-way tours with a stop at the lake

Several small-group tours run from Christchurch to Queenstown via Tekapo and Mount Cook in about 13 hours. They combine travel and sightseeing in one day and end in the other city, so they are not a return trip. Some also start in Tekapo and finish in Queenstown or Christchurch, with room for one large and one small bag per person.

Day tours from Christchurch or Queenstown

Return day tours from Christchurch to Mount Cook stop at Lake Tekapo on the way and take around 13 hours. Mount Cook day tours from Queenstown take about 12 hours. Book these only if you are staying in those cities, and check whether the route includes Tekapo if the lake matters to you.

For most people staying in Tekapo without a car, the shuttle is the simplest choice if you want time on the trails. Pick the small-group tour if a guide and lunch matter more than hours in the park, and a one-way tour only if you are moving on to Queenstown or Christchurch anyway.

Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park

Aoraki/Mount Cook Village is about 70 to 75 minutes from Tekapo by car, without photo stops. The drive follows State Highway 8 and then State Highway 80 along Lake Pukaki. Plan more time if you stop often or the road is wet or icy.

Most visitors come for the short walks in the valleys below the mountain. A second bridge on the Hooker Valley Track opened in July 2026. The first bridge has a limit of 20 people at a time, and DOC is introducing visitor management there, so check the current arrangements before you go. For the walks, the village and the glaciers, see the Hooker Valley Track guide on our sister site.

Scenic flights over the Southern Alps also leave from the airfield just south of Tekapo, so you do not need to drive to Mount Cook to fly. Our page on scenic flights from Lake Tekapo explains the route and what to check.

Lake Pukaki

Lake Pukaki lies on the way to Mount Cook, so you see it on every Mount Cook day trip from Tekapo. The road runs along its shore toward the mountain, and the shuttle from Tekapo runs via the lake.

The lake also lies on the Alps 2 Ocean cycle route between Tekapo and Twizel. More on the viewpoints and the lakeshore is in the Lake Pukaki guide.

Twizel

Twizel is the next town southwest of Tekapo, about 40 to 45 minutes by car. It is a common stop on the way to or from Mount Cook and a base for people who want to be closer to the national park.

By bike on the Alps 2 Ocean

The Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail has an alternative start in Lake Tekapo. The section to Twizel is 54 km long, grade 2, and takes about 4 to 5 hours. It passes Tekapo A, follows the canal to Tekapo B and continues along the shore of Lake Pukaki. Riding the trail is free; bike hire, shuttles and accommodation cost extra.

Lake Alexandrina

Lake Alexandrina lies just west of Mount John. A walking track links the lakes in this area. There is camping and an existing settlement of huts, so do not count on finding a place to rent there. Our camping page explains the rules. You can pair the lake with a drive up Mount John, whose private road is open from 09:00–16:00 for NZD 14 per vehicle (2026); see the Mount John guide.

Fairlie

Fairlie is the first town east of Tekapo on State Highway 8 toward Christchurch, about 30 minutes away. The direct bus between Tekapo and Christchurch Airport stops there, and some tours from Christchurch take a break in the town. It makes an easy stop on your way in or out.

Before you set off

A few practical checks for any day trip from Tekapo.

Road and weather

State Highway 8 is an alpine road, and snow can affect it and State Highway 80 to Mount Cook even outside winter. No summer date guarantees snow-free roads. Check the road and the weather before you drive, and know how to fit chains.

Driving licence

NZTA allows a valid foreign licence for up to 18 months from your last arrival and has announced a return to 12 months from 1 November 2026. A licence not in English needs an accurate English translation or an international driving permit as well.
