Which Lake Tekapo tours are on offer

Lake Tekapo tours fall into four groups. Night tours under the dark sky come first. Then come scenic flights from the Tekapo aerodrome, day trips by minibus to Aoraki/Mount Cook, and a small group of local farm, four-wheel-drive and seasonal lupin tours. The hot pools day pass is a ticket rather than a tour, but it is sold in the same places.

Before you book, check where the tour starts. Most stargazing and flight products start in or just outside Tekapo village. Long coach and minibus tours from Christchurch or Queenstown only pass through and stop at the lake for a short break. They suit you if you do not stay overnight, but they do not include any night sky activity.

Our picks: tours compared

Stargazing leads the list: the summit tour for the observatory, the telescope evening for comfort, the shared tour for a lower price. The flight and the shuttle cover the daytime.

Stargazing tours

The reason most people stay a night in Tekapo. Full details on the stargazing page.

Mount John summit tour

The only way for the public to be on the summit at night. The tour lasts 1 hour 45 minutes including return transport from a base in the village, and a cold weather jacket is provided. The minimum age is 10. You still need warm clothes and sturdy shoes, because the summit sits at 1,029 m.

Crater stargazing

Here you watch the sky from artificial viewing hollows at a private observatory, sheltered from wind and light. The tour lasts 75 minutes and children from 5 can join. Transport from the base in the village is included.

Telescope sites near the village

Several smaller tours take you to a dark site with large telescopes. Depending on the tour, warm jackets, hot chocolate, a fire bowl or a photo of you under the sky are included. These tours last about 75 minutes to 2 hours. Some meet at an office in the village, others at the site itself.

Stars and hot pools

The star soak lasts 90 minutes, with about 35 minutes in a pool at 37.5 to 38.5 °C and a floating hammock for looking up. It is a separate night tour and not part of the hot pools day pass. The minimum age is 10.

Indoor astronomy

An indoor experience in the village covers the Māori understanding of the night sky and does not depend on the weather. It is a good plan B on a cloudy night or with small children.

Scenic flights from the Tekapo aerodrome

The aerodrome lies directly on SH8, about 4 km south of the village. There are no scheduled flights to Tekapo.

Plane flight to the Alps and the glaciers

The fixed-wing route takes about 50 minutes in the air and covers about 200 km. It passes Aoraki/Mount Cook and the Tasman Glacier and crosses to Westland with the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers and the West Coast. Plan an hour in total and check in 15 minutes before departure. The flight passes over the glaciers but does not land on them.

Short helicopter flight

A 25-minute helicopter flight over the Mackenzie Basin and its lakes includes an alpine landing and starts from a base on the Tekapo-Twizel road. Weather decides whether the landing takes place on the day.

Weather can change the route or cancel the flight. The plane operator does not charge if it cancels for weather or operational reasons. Helicopter flights and glacier landings that start at Mount Cook Airport are covered on our scenic flights page and by our sister guide to Mount Cook scenic flights.

Day trips from Tekapo to Aoraki/Mount Cook

The drive to Aoraki/Mount Cook Village takes about 1 hour 10 to 15 minutes, past Lake Pukaki.

Shuttle with free time

A shuttle leaves from the village supermarket car park and takes about 8 to 9 hours return, with stops at Lake Pukaki and the Tasman Lake area. Water, snacks and wifi are included, snow spikes when there is snow. Lunch is not included, and the walks are self-guided.

Small group day tour

A shorter guided minibus tour of about 6 hours includes lunch and snacks. It suits you if you do not want to plan the day yourself.

One-way tours

Some small group tours continue from Tekapo via Mount Cook to Queenstown or run back to Christchurch, with room for one large and one small bag. They replace a transfer day rather than a return trip.

No Tekapo shuttle includes a guided walk or a boat on the glacier lake. For the Hooker Valley Track and the national park, read our Hooker Valley Track guide and our page on day trips from Lake Tekapo.

Lake Tekapo activities by day

Short local tours that fill a morning or afternoon.

If you are looking for a Lake Tekapo activity besides the stars, there are guided four-wheel-drive trips of about 3 hours into the high country, including the Cass Valley, and farm experiences on a working high-country station. In early summer, lupin tours drive to flower fields on private land. A 2-hour fishing trip includes the gear and the licence. With children, a small petting zoo in Tekapo takes less than an hour.

Most of what there is to do in Lake Tekapo is free, though: the lakeshore, the footbridge, the church grounds and the walk up Mount John. See things to do in Lake Tekapo and walks around the lake.

What to check before you book

The small print differs more than the tour names suggest.

Cloud and refund rules

If stargazing is impossible on a summit or crater tour, you are offered rebooking, a voucher or a full refund, and an indoor or virtual session may be offered instead. For the star soak, tours from 18 June 2026 refund 25 percent on certain fares if telescope time is under 30 minutes. Economy, Premium and Premium Plus fares are excluded.

Check-in time

Plan to arrive 15 to 20 minutes before a summit or crater tour. Your booking confirmation gives the exact time.

Clothing and light

Nights are cool even in summer, with average lows of about 8.5 °C in January. Wear closed shoes, long trousers and a warm jacket. White torches and flash photos are not allowed during the tours.

Book ahead in peak season

Evening tours to Mount John are recommended to be booked in advance in the main season. Ordinary hot pool entry needs no booking, while stargazing and spa options do.

Lake Tekapo tours: frequently asked questions

Which tour should I book first at Lake Tekapo?

For most visitors it is a stargazing tour, because the dark sky is the main reason to stay a night. Choose the summit tour for the observatory setting, a telescope site for longer viewing, or the star soak if you want the hot pools too.

Can I see the southern lights on a tour?

Sometimes, but no tour can promise it. The southern lights depend on geomagnetic activity, darkness, a moon that is not too bright and a clear view to the south.

Are tours from Christchurch worth it?

They are long days of about 13 hours with a short stop at the lake and no night program. If you want to see the stars, stay at least one night in Tekapo.

Can children join the stargazing tours?

It depends on the tour. The crater tour starts at 5 years, a telescope tour at 6 and the summit tour and the star soak at 10. Babies in carriers are not allowed on the star soak.

Do scenic flights land on a glacier?

The 50-minute plane flight from Tekapo does not land. The short helicopter flight includes an alpine landing if the weather allows it.
