Mt John Tekapo at a glance
Mt John is the hill above Lake Tekapo, with Lake Alexandrina to its west. The observatory site on top sits at 1,029 m. By day you can reach the summit area on a private toll road or on foot, and walk the short circuit around the top. The telescope buildings themselves are not open to normal day visitors.
At night it is different. The road closes at 16:00, and the public can only visit the summit after dark on the organised Mount John stargazing tour. If the night sky is your reason to come, book that tour; if you want the walk and the summit, come in daylight.

How to get up Mt John
Two ways by day: the toll road or your own feet.
By car on the toll road
The access is via Godley Peaks Road off State Highway 8, about 15 minutes from the village. The private road costs NZD 14 per vehicle (2026), paid at the gate by EFTPOS or credit card. It is open Monday to Sunday from 09:00 to 16:00 and can close because of weather. Vehicles with more than 12 seats are not allowed, and commercial groups have to arrange their visit in advance.
The direct summit walk
The direct track up to the summit is 1.5 km one way and takes 1 to 1.5 hours. Plan for the descent on top of that.
Walks around Lake Tekapo →The Lakeshore circuit
The DOC Lakeshore loop on Mount John is 8.9 km in total and takes about 3 hours. Mountain biking is not allowed on this DOC track, and dogs are not permitted.
Summit Circuit from the top car park
If you drove up, the Summit Circuit takes 30 to 45 minutes from the summit car park. That is only the walk around the top, not the hike from the village.

Mount John University Observatory
The observatory belongs to the University of Canterbury. It was officially opened in 1965 and is still used for research and teaching. It is a working research site, not a museum: the summit areas are open in suitable conditions, but the telescope buildings stay closed to ordinary day visitors.
The site lies inside the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, recognised in 2012. Lighting rules in the district aim to keep the sky dark for research and for the cultural landscape.
The public evening program on the summit runs only through the approved stargazing tour. You check in at a base in the village and ride up together; your own car is not an option at night.

Mount John walks compared
Times and distances for the main routes.
| Route | Start | Distance | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Direct summit track | – | 1.5 km one way | 1 to 1.5 hours one way | Walkers only |
| Lakeshore circuit | Mount John | 8.9 km loop | 3 hours | DOC, no bikes, no dogs |
| Summit Circuit | Summit car park | – | 30 to 45 minutes | Only after driving up |
For most visitors with a car and a couple of hours, the toll road plus the Summit Circuit is the easiest option. Walkers with half a day get more from the Lakeshore circuit.
On the summit
What to expect once you are up.
The café
A café on the summit serves day visitors. Opening hours fall between 09:00 and 16:00 and may be shorter, for example 10:00 to 15:00, so check before you go. Do not plan on it for an evening visit.
Weather
The road can close in bad weather. Plan your visit for the daytime hours and keep an eye on conditions before you drive up.
Lake Alexandrina
Lake Alexandrina lies west of Mount John, and a regional walking track links the lakes.
Peninsula walk in spring
The Peninsula walk, also reached from Godley Peaks Road, closes from mid October to mid December for lambing. Check the signs on site.
Mount John at night
The only way up after dark is a guided tour.
The summit stargazing tour lasts 1 hour 45 minutes, from age 10, with return transport from the village base and a cold weather jacket on loan. The 2026 price is NZD 239 for adults and children, valid until 30 September 2027. Clear skies are never guaranteed, and the tour may move to an indoor program if the sky is not suitable. All tour types, from summit to crater and hot pool soaks, are compared on the Lake Tekapo stargazing page.
