When to visit Lake Tekapo

There is no single best time to visit Lake Tekapo. The lake lies at about 710 m in the Mackenzie Basin, and the climate is dry, sunny and cold at night for much of the year. Summer from December to February is the warmest time, with mean daily highs of 20.1 to 22.2 °C. The lupins usually flower from late November to late December. Winter from June to August brings frost, snow on the mountains and the ski season.

The night sky is a reason to come in every season, but no month promises clear nights. Moon, cloud and cold decide what you see. If the stars are the main reason for your trip, compare the Lake Tekapo stargazing tours before you fix your dates, since their evening schedule changes with the season.

Lake Tekapo in summer

December to February is the warmest and sunniest time. On average January has about 267 hours of sunshine and December about 257. Days are long, which suits walks, the Alps 2 Ocean cycle trail and day trips to Aoraki/Mount Cook. The nights stay cool, with average lows of 6.8 to 8.5 °C.

Long summer evenings also mean that it gets dark late. Stargazing tours start once it is dark, so expect a late night out. In summer the hot pools stargazing soak runs on more evenings than in winter, but its schedule changes during the year, so check it for your dates.

School holidays and public holidays

Booking ahead is advised for the hot pools in the summer and winter school holidays and on public holidays, and stargazing tours are best booked in advance in the main season. Both point to busy periods in the village. Book your bed early if you travel at those times; our page on where to stay in Lake Tekapo compares the options.

Spring and the lupin season

Spring from September to November warms up quickly: mean highs climb from 12.4 °C in September to 17.3 °C in November, while early mornings can still be cold. The ski season ends in September, and the ice rink at the hot pools is closed until its next season.

When do the lupins flower?

Around Lake Tekapo the lupins usually bloom from late November to late December, often with a peak in early December. Weather and weed control can shift this. Across New Zealand the plant can flower from November to February, but that does not mean a bloom at Tekapo for that whole time. The Russell lupin is an introduced plant that spreads into the braided riverbeds of the basin, so do not pick it or spread its seed. Our lupin guide has the details.

Lambing on the Peninsula walk

The Peninsula walk near Godley Peaks Road is usually closed from mid-October to mid-December for lambing. Check the signs before you set out and choose another route if it is closed.

Autumn at the lake

March is still mild with a mean high of 19.5 °C and is the driest month on average. April and May cool down fast, and May brings the most rain of the year at about 72 mm. Nights get longer, so stargazing tours start earlier in the evening, which suits families. The ice rink at the hot pools usually opens again from mid-April or May, depending on the weather.

Winter at Lake Tekapo

June to August is the coldest time of the year. Mean highs are 6.6 to 8.8 °C and mean lows stay below freezing. On average there is ground frost on about 24 days in June, 26 in July and 25 in August. Sunshine drops to about 144 hours in June and 149 in July. The Roundhill ski area ran from 27 June to 20 September in 2026. Carry chains and check the roads before you drive. Our Lake Tekapo winter guide covers skiing, skating and the roads.

Stargazing through the year

Lake Tekapo lies in the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, recognised in 2012 and covering 4,367 km². Stargazing tours run all year, but what you see depends on the season, the moon, the weather and the hour. A night near new moon is darker and shows fainter objects, yet it is no promise of a clear sky.

Winter nights are long but very cold. Some tours lend warm jackets, and you still need warm clothes and closed shoes. Summer nights are short and start late. The southern lights are possible on some nights, never guaranteed, and need a dark sky with a free view to the south. When the sky is cloudy, some tours switch to an indoor program. Check the moon phase and the cloud forecast on the day.
