Walking at Lake Tekapo: the main tracks
Most walks around Lake Tekapo are short and start within the village. The classic is Mount John, the hill above the lake with the observatory on top. Below it runs a long circuit along the shore. On the other side of the village, Cowans Hill and the regional park on the eastern shore add easy tracks for walkers and cyclists.
Some routes appear in different forms: the Department of Conservation (DOC) maintains its own tracks, and the local walkway network marks further loops with other lengths and rules. Use the signs at the start to see which route you are on. Walking is free; if you would rather see the area with a guide or from the air, see our Lake Tekapo tours.

Stargazing, the hot pools and a shuttle to the self-guided walks at Aoraki/Mount Cook.
Mount John walks
The full lakeshore circuit of Mount John is a loop of 8.9 km and takes about 3 hours. If you only want the top, the direct track from the village to the summit is about 1.5 km one way and takes 1 to 1.5 hours. Do not confuse it with the short summit circuit of 30 to 45 minutes, which starts at the summit car park, so you need to be up there already.
Mountain biking is not allowed on the DOC walkway, and dogs are not permitted. In suitable conditions the summit areas are open to walkers, with views over the lake and the basin. The observatory buildings belong to the University of Canterbury and are not open to day visitors. The summit café keeps daytime hours only. More on the hill, the road and the observatory is on the Mount John page.

Lakeshore, Cowans Hill and the peninsula
Shorter walks on the village side of the lake.
Lakeshore path in the village
From the road bridge along the shore to the hot pools is 2.8 km one way and takes about 30 minutes. This is a village path, not the Mount John lakeshore circuit.
Cowans Hill
The DOC Cowans Hill track is 3.2 km one way, 1 hour 30 minutes on foot or 1 hour by bike, grade 2. Access is at the road bridge or from Hamilton Drive, where a 5 km bike loop starts. No dogs on the DOC track. A separately marked local loop of 6.1 km (1.5 to 2 hours) allows dogs on a lead; it is a different route.
Peninsula walk
The peninsula walk is 5.6 km and takes about 1.5 hours, with access from Godley Peaks Road. It closes from mid October to mid December for lambing. Check the signs at the start.
The regional park on the eastern shore
On the eastern shore lies the Takapō Regional Park, 165 ha with 24 km of tracks for walking and biking, picnic spots and swimming areas. The main loops are the Family Loop of 4.4 km and the Perimeter Loop of 6.9 km; the Throne Track is 0.8 km. Some tracks are for walkers only and some for mountain bikes only, so follow the markers.
Dogs must be on a lead outside the fenced dog park. Portable gas barbecues are allowed with at least 2 m distance to vegetation, which is not a general permission for fires on the shore. The park has 3 car parks and accessible toilets at Station and Homestead.

Cycling the Alps 2 Ocean from Lake Tekapo
The Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail has an alternative start at Lake Tekapo. The section to Twizel is 54 km, grade 2, and takes 4 to 5 hours by bike. It follows the route past Tekapo A, along the canal, past Tekapo B and along the shore of Lake Pukaki. You do not need a helicopter for this start; the main start at Aoraki is a different route.
The trail itself is free to ride, and donations are welcome. Bike hire, shuttles and accommodation are separate costs. Frost and snow are possible in winter, so plan the ride for the warmer months or check conditions first.
Horse trekking in Tekapo
Horse riding is among the local activities around Tekapo. Do not assume horses are allowed on every walking track, and check current options and routes before you plan around a ride.
Walks beyond the village
West of Mount John lie Lake Alexandrina and Lake McGregor, and a regional walking track runs between the two lakes.
A well-known walk in the region is the Hooker Valley Track at Aoraki/Mount Cook, about 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 15 minutes by car from Tekapo. It has its own guide on our sister site: Hooker Valley Track. A shuttle from Tekapo takes you to the self-guided walks there; see day trips from Lake Tekapo. For the season and weather on the tracks, see the best time to visit, and for snow and ice the winter page.
